Time to Eat the Dog

Say what?!?

"New Zealand authors Robert and Brenda Vale's book, "Time to Eat the Dog: The Real Guide to Sustainable Living" is an exhaustive analysis of the environmental impact of common pets such as cats and dogs. The authors studied the carbon emissions created by pets, including the ingredients in their food and the land required to grow it. And the results don't bode well for Fido, who compares poorly to that SUV."

Really?

"Owning a dog really is quite an extravagance, mainly because of the carbon footprint of meat," Vale told New Scientist magazine. So what's the "eco-pawprint" of your pet?

German shepherds: 1.1 hectares, compared with 0.41ha for a large SUV

Cats: 0.15ha (slightly less than a Volkswagen Golf).

Hamsters: 0.014ha (two of them equate to a medium-sized plasma TV).

Goldfish: 0.00034ha (an eco-finprint equal to two cellphones).

For more information, read the full article on New Scientist."

So it's not just beef and dairy cattle causing the problems.... go figure!

These green folks are going too far with this crap. Doesn't peta say we should give up pets. Now these nuts want to cleanse the planet of all life except plant life. What the hell is wrong with this freaks.

I thought it was tongue-in-cheek when I first heard about it too. Kill off the excess dogs, cats, and pocket pets then the humans. Then and only then will "Mother Earth" be a truly happy place. Of course no one will know it since no one will be on earth to experience it.

Forgive them, Father, for they know not what they do.

WTF
I agree with Dave.

My sister is real heavy into this kind of thinking. I've tried to talk sense to her but she don't want to hear it.

I bet those Newfies have a BIG footprint....hahaha.

Using dial-up works best if you have a really fast computer. Several years ago when I went above a gigabyte, it made all the difference if I had to use the dial-up.

Isn't this book one of the dumbest ever?

This book says much the same thing that many like PeTA, Peter Singer, and Cass Sunstein have tauted for many years.

I always got the feeling that all these terribly mixed-up animal rights people want you and me gone from the face of the earth but not necessarily themselves. Hmmm.
